    K2 Welcomes New Customers

    December 2011.
It's been an extremely busy 12 months for K2, perhaps the busiest in our history, and we are delighted to end a productive year with the confirmation of a number of new Guardian sales. K2 are very pleased to welcome Homerton Hospital, Royal Bolton Hospital, King's College Hospital and Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital to the K2 family. Setup and development is well under way at these sites and final implementation and go-live is planned for the New Year.

We have a good idea of what is in the current sales pipeline and can say with confidence that 2012 will be every bit as productive as 2011, if not more so.

    K2 Achieves First Italian Sales

    K2 Achieve First Italian Sales

    December 2011.
It is with the greatest pleasure that K2 can announce the release of a fully translated and fully certified version of the K2MS Fetal Monitoring Training System in Italian. This, coupled with the news of the first sale in Italy, establishes the Italian market as a new and significant step in K2's expanding global ambition.

It has taken over a year of dedication by K2 and Italian associates to translate and finalise this new edition to the K2 portfolio. Already running successfully in over 20 countries around the globe, to a customer base of over 100,000, the K2MS Fetal Monitoring Training System provides invaluable and comprehensive training in the assessment of fetal status during labour. The importance of training in fetal heart rate monitoring interpretation has long been recognised and the award winning K2MS Training System is proven to be an effective risk management tool for clinicians of all grades.

Following the recent release of the Italian FMTS, it is also with great delight that the first confirmed sale of this newly released version of the Training System has been received from the University of Milan Bicocca, Milan. Based in Northern Italy in the Lombardy region, this prestigious university was established in 1998 and is now home to 30,000 students spread across its two campuses. The School of Medicine, based in Monza on the outskirts of Milan and which shares a close relationship with San Gerardo Hospital (pictured above), has chosen the K2 FMTS to provide exceptional support and training for its students and clinicians, and is an invaluable addition to their existing online research system. K2 are extremely proud that the Teaching System will assist in maintaining the high standards set at the School of Medicine and welcome them all to the K2 family.

The release and sales of the Italian Fetal Monitoring Training System would not have been possible without the invaluable assistance from colleagues in Italy. Their dedication and hard work translating the Teaching System from English to Italian has been instrumental, and K2 would like to extend its most sincere thanks to them for the time and effort they have taken with this project.

    K2 Wins Prestigious Innovation Award

    K2 Wins Prestigious Innovation Award

    November 2011.
It is with great pleasure that K2 can announce that they are the proud winners of the 2011 Innovation in Healthcare Award from the Institution of Engineering and Technology . The Award is in recognition of K2's ground-breaking work with INFANT® - A decision support system for interpretation of fetal heart rate monitoring during childbirth.

The Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) is Europe's largest professional engineering society working to share and advance science, engineering and technology across the world and the Innovation Awards are an annual ceremony where a wide range of disciplines are properly recognised. It is, therefore, a great honour that K2 have been singled out from hundreds of entries to be the successful winner of the Health Technologies category for their intelligent software system INFANT®.

INFANT®, Intelligent Fetal Assessment, is a unique and pioneering software program that is capable of analysing the fetal heart rate during labour (called the CTG), in real time, and alerting clinicians early to changes in pattern and signs of potential problems. Its analysis and interpretation of the FHR and contraction patterns is designed to improve outcomes by supporting human interpretation of the CTG, and to draw attention to anything that causes concern. This revolutionary innovation is currently taking part in the largest maternity study undertaken by the NHS in the UK, in order to objectively evaluate this new technology before its widespread introduction. Run independently by Professor Peter Brocklehurst and the National Epidemiology Unit, Oxford University, INFANT® has already taken part in over 10,000 births across the UK and Ireland. Following over 20 years of development, INFANT's aim to reduce the costs, both emotional and financial, of the misinterpretation of the CTG traces is becoming a reality, and the recognition received from IET is a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment by K2 to improve maternity care for all. (INFANT)

Dr Robert Keith, K2's founder and Director, commented upon receiving the award, "We applied for the IET Innovation Awards as they are seen as industry leading and we are very honoured that 20 years of research has been recognised in this way. We have waited for the right moment to compete at this level and we are delighted with the result."

The award was presented to K2 at a glittering ceremony at London's prestigious Intercontinental Hotel, Park Lane. Hosted by actor, writer and presenter, Robert Llewellyn, Dr Robert Keith and colleagues James Meeson and Chris Mabey were delighted to be honoured with this prestigious award marking K2's INFANT® software as a ground-breaking advancement in the field of maternity care.

    Birmingham Women's Go Paperless

Birmingham Women's Maternity Department go Paperless - Guardian System

    September 2011.
Following months of extensive preparation K2 are delighted to announce that Birmingham Women's Hospital, Edgbaston, has now successfully gone live with both K2MS Guardian™ and K2MS Athena™ systems; providing them with an exceptional and comprehensive electronic maternity management system that has helped them realise their aim to become fully paperless. K2MS Guardian™, the full electronic capture of patient information during childbirth, and K2MS Athena™, electronic maternity management system for the whole of pregnancy and neonatology, is now running successfully at Birmingham Women's NHS Foundation Trust and has enabled them to benefit from full automation and paperless efficiency.

Collation of comprehensive patient records including observations, examinations and investigations is an essential process for all health departments and one which has traditionally been a consistently time consuming process. Records, as well as being required for real-time review, also need to be readily available for auditing and reference, however, for many years paper records and retrospective data input have failed to deliver accessible and timely information. The installation and integration of Guardian™ and Athena™ at Birmingham Women's, however, has provided them with an efficient and automated process that has streamlined documentation and enhanced traceability. Electronic storage of data is fundamental for effortless auditing and what would traditionally take staff weeks, or even months, to compile now takes just hours. This enhanced and improved auditing process is invaluable for the achievement of high CNST results. E-records also remain secure, unlike paper copies which are un-resilient and can, such as CTG traces, literally fade over time. By recording every detail electronically, however, all records and notes are stored safely and can be viewed, complete, at any time. Remote access to the maternity management systems day or night also allows instant access to notes and observations which increases awareness, enhances communication and, of course, places the emphasis firmly on patient safety.

Birmingham Women's hospital has set itself targets to fully implement all stages of integration over the coming months. A fully paperless and streamlined system is their goal and the rigid and efficient paper processes already in place will aid their switch from manual to electronic patient record.

    Guardian™ Launched at Manchester's St Mary's

    September 2011.
It is with much pleasure that K2 can announce the successful go-live of the K2MS Guardian™ labour management system at the prestigious St Mary's Hospital in Manchester. Following extensive preparation the dedicated team at St Mary's, alongside the K2 specialists, successfully implemented Guardian™ in the labour ward during one of the busiest days and nights the ward has experienced to date. It is a credit to all involved that go-live was such a success and that the hard work and dedication by both teams brought about such a positive outcome.

Guardian™, an exceptional fetal monitoring system able to capture the whole EPR through labour and delivery: including CTGs, partograms, cord blood gas results and all labour events, is an invaluable tool for exceptional monitoring and the collation of contemporaneous notes at the point of care. Data is shown in real-time and is easily accessible from not only the bedside but also externally at the central station or by secure connection via the internet day or night. This extensive accessibility ensures enhanced communication amongst the care team and opens discussion and increased awareness. Emphasis is, therefore, placed firmly on a shared experience, learning and, most importantly, on patient safety.

The electronic capture of data is also invaluable for efficient and comprehensive auditing, crucial for the achievement of high CNST results. Guardian™ stores all e-records securely and ensures they can be viewed easily at any time. This instant accessibility and enhanced traceability is invaluable for streamlined auditing and helps to provide an increasingly desirable paper-light environment. Indeed, St Mary's next step is to identify a date when they can go-live with their plans to switch to paper-light processes and K2 is extremely proud that Guardian™ is a key element in making this a reality.

The installation of Guardian™ also allows St Mary's to participate in the INFANT project (INFANT). INFANT (INtelligent Fetal AssessmeNT) is a unique software module running within Guardian™ that interprets the fetal heart rate during labour and alerts clinicians early to signs of potential problems. INFANT's aim to support clinicians' interpretation of the CTG, and to ultimately improve outcomes, is being trialled in the largest maternity study undertaken by the NHS in the UK, and is open to any hospital running K2MS Guardian™. For further information please contact us.

K2 Join Forces with US Market Leader in Perinatal Monitoring

K2 Joins Forces with US Market Leader in Perinatal Monitoring

    July 2011.
It is with the greatest delight that K2 can announce they have signed a partnership agreement with leading American industry experts Clinical Computer Systems Incorporated (CCSI) to integrate K2's unique INFANT® software module with CCSI's award winning OBIX Perinatal Data System.

    Background.
The stresses of childbirth can be severe for all concerned and no more so than for the unborn child. Oxygen deprivation that can lead to brain damage or death is a continual and critical concern and it is therefore essential that the fetus is routinely monitored to detect levels of fetal distress and to better judge when clinical intervention is required. Fetal heart rate traces (CTGs) are notoriously difficult to read, however, and the costs, both human and financial, of misinterpretation are immense. Current litigation costs for cases of babies damaged during birth stands at over £1billion and the emotional costs to clinicians, families and the children are immeasurable. It is for these reasons, following over 20 years of research and in-depth study, that INFANT® (Intelligent Fetal Assessment) has been developed in order to support human interpretation of fetal heart rate montioring and to provoke thought and communication (www.k2ms.com/iFMTS-INFANT.html).

    K2MS INFANT®
A unique software module specifically designed to run within a fetal monitoring system, INFANT® is capable of providing an electronic analysis of the fetal heart rate and interpretation of the CTG trace, and incorporates a series of alert statuses and parameters capable of notifying clinicians early to changes in pattern and signs of potential problems. Running in real time, at the bedside, using a direct feed from the fetal monitor, INFANT® can also be accessed from central stations, offices or remotely promoting wider communication and discussion in order to improve patient safety, outcomes and to reduce litigation costs. Able to provide both visual and audible alerts, INFANT® is a unique and invaluable resource essential for enhancing human evaluations and for providing exceptional clinical decision support. Incorporating INFANT® in to the OBIX Perinatal system will provide CCSI with an instrumental addition to their portfolio and will be of huge benefit to maternity care in the United States.

    CCSI
A leader for over 20 years in perinatal data systems with an installed base of over 300 hospitals, CCSI is a high technology company, based in Elgin Illinois, which is dedicated to the development and support of its OBIX Perinatal data system (www.obix.com). OBIX, ranked number 1 for labour and delivery systems in the USA, is a comprehensive set of computerised tools that enables clinicians to provide exceptional monitoring, support and care for mothers and babies, in both the hospital and outpatient environment. This comprehensive central, bedside and remote fetal monitoring system is able to provide invaluable functionality from archiving to real-time point of care monitoring. Designed to help improve quality of care and reduce poor outcomes, K2 are very proud that this multi-award winning data system will now incorporate K2's unique INFANT® software.

    The Partnership
Kim Sell, President of CCSI, comments: "We are excited to partner with K2 Medical Systems to help make their new pattern interpretation technology available in the US market for the benefit of our customers and for added value to our OBIX system. By joining forces with K2, we reinforce our commitment to providing advanced perinatal decision support tools that help caregivers improve their patient monitoring capabilities and quality of care." K2 Medical Systems are proud to be a global organisation serving over 100,000 clinicians worldwide. With offices in UK, USA and Australia K2 are thrilled to be joining forces with such a prestigious and experienced company as CCSI, and to have the opportunity to expand and develop knowledge and experience in order to further maternity care and patient safety. K2MS Director Dr Robert Keith says of the partnership, "K2 and CCSI have similar origins, backgrounds, ideals and aspirations. This partnership represents a tremendous opportunity for us both to introduce INFANT throughout US healthcare." K2MS INFANT®, coupled with CCSI's OBIX, will provide users with an unrivalled and unique perinatal monitoring system; invaluable for providing improved care for mothers and babies.

K2 Release Next Generation of Fetal Monitoring Training Simulator

    April 2011.
K2 are excited to announce the release of the new K2MS Fetal Monitoring Training System. The FMTS, providing comprehensive training in the assessment of fetal status during labour, has just received a major upgrade and now includes not only brand new teaching material, but the next generation of fetal monitoring training simulation, Simulator 2.0.

Now fully upgraded to embrace NICE guidelines, Simulator 2.0 has significant new functionality, and increased management options, allowing users to fully assess their progress and developing competence. As well as being able to review real cases from a database of thousands of interesting, abnormal and rare CTGs, this unique innovation now allows users to classify individual CTG features and select from specified categories. Further options within the simulator also allow the user to make general selections that might influence the birth process, thereby allowing better reflection and provide a mechanism for further analysis and consideration.

K2 Releases Next Generation of Fetal Monitoring Training Simulator

Expert analysis, and the additional benefits of INFANT® (INFANT) technology embedded within the simulator, provides further feedback against which the user can score and compare their own interpretations. Segment by segment feedback is given by the experts from within K2, and from those within individual hospitals, which can be directly challenged by the user via comments and queries sent through the simulator. Each query will receive a personal response facilitating a full discussion if desired. It is possible, however, to review cases with no feedback from either the experts or INFANT®, using the new assessment mode. By being able to judge cases solely on their own skill and interpretation the user is able to measure their developing competence.

K2 Release Next Generation of Fetal Monitoring Simulator

Five new topics are also included in this new release of the Training System, with Shoulder Dystocia available imminently. Chapters on Breech, Cord Presentation, Maternal Collapse and Human Factors are also coming soon making the K2 FMTS the most comprehensive and effective fetal monitoring training system available.
